Be Bold

Glen Keane lectured at Cal Arts last night. Still drawing, still filled with passion, and still spreading the love of art. He showed artists he loves and photos he's collected throughout the years that really inspire him. He even demonstrated how he cleans up his rough drawings. It was incredible. He utilizes every little pencil stroke and line of energy in his first pass to capture the essence of it. You can easily start filling in forms and draw correct anatomy to make that clean up work...but it'll lose energy really fast. He's not afraid to trust his first impulse...and with his understanding of the human form and caricature...he makes it work and look good. Students were filming some of this so hopefully it will show up on youtube soon. You have got to see it. While watching him draw I actually felt like some of the kids who have watched me draw and caricature. It was magical. I love the way a kids face is in awe as they watch you make something appear out of nothing. Their eyes bug out and they tap their friends on the shoulder to watch. They are mesmerized. Last night, I was mesmerized.

I found a clip! Here's Glen drawing the Beast.

I think someone's in for a pounding not telling me about this...oh well.

But massive props to Glen, still doing talks at Calarts 20 years on! What a terrific evening that must have been. : )

Thanks for the link! The way Glen continues to stay passionate and refuses to go cynical after all his years on production in the industry is inspiring.
