napkin doodlies and others
Hi ya'll!
Sooooo, once again Amid has bashed Dreamworks on cartoonbrew.com.....well, what else is new eh?
We're all used to it by now...and boy are we trying our hardest to make him like us right boys?
Just keep waiting Amid, we'll get you smiling one of these days!
We'll just have to see how the audience responds to the movie now shall we. Opening May 19th! Go see it and I promise to tell you what shots I worked on. Oh yeah, there's a new trailer out.
Sorry for the lack of posts. Work, girlfriend, chores, day-dreaming, drawing, buying lots of books, training for "Flushed Away", being lazy, and having a sucky scanner are my excuses. Oh yeah, not to mention the hours I've spent trying to fix my Epson 5150 god awful stupid ass printer! I can't wait to chuck it off the side of a cliff. Hmmm, does anyone know if that's environmentally safe? Ahh who cares...I just want to bash it's brains in!
All right I'll calm down. Here's some stuff for you guys...

I think the reason Cartton Brew was bashing on Dreamworks animation, is because all they know how to do is fart jokes, jags, sex jokes, and hint at homosexuality ( Sharktale ). I guess you can only tell stories on what you know, and I guess that is all Dreamworks animation story department know. I was wondering do they have any people that have a family that understand family movies. Also what is with the very badly designed humans, which really confuses me, because they have one of the best character designers in the world working for them named Nicolas Marlet. Maybe the 3D modelers do not know how to transfer his drawing to 3D yet. I think that is why Cartoon Brew was bashing Dreamworks. No one in my animation school wants to work at Dreamworks, it is the last place on the list. When we are in story development, and some one comes up with some stupid jag or a sex joke, we call it “ pulling a Dreamworks” and we quickly say no and try and find a better way. To tell you the truth, The reason why Pixar and Disney are better, Is because of the type of stories, and the stories come from the type of people, and those people have families and heart warming experiences to use in there stories. What is up with Dreamworks? Are they all shallow, and heartless with nothing but sarcasm? You decide I know I have and a lot of other people have. There last great animation was there first one, the Prince of Egypt. Not because of the religion, but because it was NOT full of the stuff I talked about before.
Hi anonymous,
Thanks for the response. I have loads to say to you, as I understand your thoughts on the company. But I don't feel like I'd like to post it here for obvious reasons. I too don't understand why the process from art to modeling and rigging gets screwed up. That has always baffled me...and my guess is that there's not enough communication between the 2 depts. E-mail me so I can reply back to you. captainyolk@hotmail.com
Um, okay...
Remind me--what wass that movie with a big plot point revolving around laxatives? Oh yeah, The Iron Giant--only the best animated movie in the last twenty years. And W&G is full of slapstick, juvenile humor.
Dude, I'm no huge fan of fart jokes, but to pretend that Dreamworks is the only offender is, how shall I put this? Naive.
I'm not going to claim Shark Tale is as good as the Incredibles, but come on, terrible models and character design? Madagascar was *gorgeous*.
Gah.
Anyway, as to Amid's posting habits, I just wonder why he writes about CG in the first place--he clearly loves flat, graphic 2D stuff and that's great, but when he goes off on [insert any CG title here] the results are pretty predictable. (Should be interesting to see what he and other curmudgeonly types say about Flushed Away, tho'. The conflict between Aardman-love and CG-hate seems like a recipe for exploding heads.)
Yeah, weak argument.
Nice, thoughtful response, Max. Such thoughtfulness is too rare in the on-line animation world. And anonymous, Amid's beef with Dreamworks goes back to Prince of Egypt. Just read the old issues of Cartoon Blast from that time.
hey jeremy,
i am not going to comment on my feelings about the past few remarks( in part because this isnt really the time or place and i disagree with several remarks) all i can say is the animation and lighting for your new flick looks great and the story looks solid!(from the trailers anyway) ...either way i look forward to it, lets us know which shots you worked on when you get a chance....
all the best and keep animating..
Jeremy - Jerry liked the film..and he even saw the whole film. 1 out of 2 at the Brew ain't bad. And who knows, maybe I'll enjoy it too. Hasn't happened yet with a DW film but there's a first time for everything.
PS to Max - I'm always surprised at comments that I don't like CG. If you've read the site for any length of time, you'll know that I frequently sing the praises of CG works. The biggest problem that I have with CG is that most studios don't exploit its potential. It's like somebody owning a Lamborghini and never going faster than 10mph with it. Why use a technique if you're not going to take advantage of its inherent qualities?
Fair enough, Amid--I know you loved The Incredibles--but it does seem that in writing for an audience composed largely of devotees of/professionals in the field of animation, you could skew your comments more towards the pros and cons of the *animation*.
I'll keep it simple.. Great Napkin drawings, Love the tiger with the crown!
I just wanted to say that I absolutely love your recent " Napkin" posts! I love these crazy designs.
Anonymous,
get off your mighty pony already. When people post arrogance naive comments like yours. I call it "pulling snobby naive Calarts freshman" who thinks he/she knows the inner working of the industry and what's goes in on at all the studios.
How dare you question the "type of people" or artists at dreamworks or if they " have families and heart warming experiences"
No body wants to work on bad movies or tell terrible stories and not body can work at Pixar. So if you want to work for Pixar you better lock yourself in your cube for the next 3 years. Then when you got something good to show rather running your thoughts about the "type of people" at Dreamworks....then maybe...
....just maybe your karma will get better.
just wanted to give kudos for the napkin stuff, nice random bits of brain dropping(in a good way).

Forget the controversey Jeremy. Just do your best and keep up the great blog. Love to see more napkin drawings but one question. What do you wipe your mouth with? I don't see one stain on those napkins!!
Hey Jeremy,
What a cool blog. Love the originality and style. How long have you been with DreamWorks?
VEry coool!! These are very creative and stylized drawings!!
If there were ever such a person talkin crap at CalArts I'd trap em in a closet with Doogal. Zero tolerance bro, zero.
Hey, did you see who commented on my "poor dogs" post? Weird.
You'd better post something, quick, or I'm cutting you off!
