Be Bold

Glen Keane lectured at Cal Arts last night. Still drawing, still filled with passion, and still spreading the love of art. He showed artists he loves and photos he's collected throughout the years that really inspire him. He even demonstrated how he cleans up his rough drawings. It was incredible. He utilizes every little pencil stroke and line of energy in his first pass to capture the essence of it. You can easily start filling in forms and draw correct anatomy to make that clean up work...but it'll lose energy really fast. He's not afraid to trust his first impulse...and with his understanding of the human form and caricature...he makes it work and look good. Students were filming some of this so hopefully it will show up on youtube soon. You have got to see it. While watching him draw I actually felt like some of the kids who have watched me draw and caricature. It was magical. I love the way a kids face is in awe as they watch you make something appear out of nothing. Their eyes bug out and they tap their friends on the shoulder to watch. They are mesmerized. Last night, I was mesmerized.

A trip through my hand...

A phone doodle snuck up on me tonight.
It slithered and and spit right out of my hand as fast as

There's no controlling
the phone doodle...
it does what it pleases
and you have to accept it.

This made me laugh sooo hard!

Maybe this is old...but I don't care, I just found it.



I love everything about this. The setup, the attack, the payoff...the way the guy gets so angry he throws pigeon feed at the giant bird! But it's not an ordinary throw, it's a violent, "why did you scare my babies" throw! Brilliant!

And if you feel like laughing some more....well just watch "Tim and Eric's Awesome Show Great Job" on Adult Swim on Cartoon Network Sunday nights.

"Ah, L'Amour" (1995) was produced during Don's freshman year at UC Santa Barbara for a beginning production class, and was never intended to be screened publicly. The two minute 16mm short was somehow completed in just a few weeks despite Don having had little experience working with film; made most noticeable by the visible fingerprints all over the camera lens. By no small miracle, Don's shaky guitar soundtrack - recorded solo in his dorm room on a broken down boom-box - somehow stayed in sync."

friday finally....

She arrived at the barn just as I awoke. I flew down to get a closer look. Maybe she had food for me. Who was this girl and where were her clothes? Then I noticed the medallion around her neck. It said everything.



Angela often slept walked. Tonight she slept crawled. Where did she crawl to? The kitchen of course. She couldn't resist guacamole.

The bus station was hot...too hot in fact. Cynthia began undressing... layer by layer. She couldn't stand the heat. People stared as they walked by...but she didn't care. She enjoyed the attention.

She arrived after midnight...entering the pub with her long curly hair. Everyone turned around except me. No way was I looking at this dame again. She broke my heart once and I aint havin' that again. I could hear the murmur of the patrons as she downed shot after shot of tequila.



I awoke from what seemed like a nap. Although I don't recall naps invlolving ropes. My wrists ached and pulsated. These two dames were sitting in front of me. As sex crazed as I was, I had to shut my eyes and resist their temptation. Blood began to pour down my forehead. I was injured. Who are these girls and what do they want with me?
I was about to find out.

She looked at me and smiled....as if she enjoyed knocking me down with the butt of her rifle. This girl was strong and confident. I've never seen concentration like she had....so focused and clear. Will we ever survive this dry desert together? I sure hope so.

I glance over the figure drawing model and see a better subject: Alex . And so ....I draw.



Waiting for the movies in Burbank. I spot a homeless man. What do I have to draw on? Nothing. Wait. In my back pocket. Ah yes, my paycheck envelope. Thank god for paychecks.



Long phone conversation. Who it's with? I have no idea. Must keep moving to stay alive. Pen, paper....success.



Dave Pimentel lecturing. I stare at that goatee...and then back up at the thick glasses. My hand starts moving and then...a turtle Dave is born.

Ha! A Coke Ad!!


This is how I animate at work. I have to get inside the computer (through the back) and work my way to the models. Then I control them with wires and voice commands. Sometimes I get electrocuted..but then I call a T.D. over (technical director) and they spray me down with a fire extinguisher. Some days are rougher than others.
